Don’t fail at your health. Rather pivot your mindset and expand your horizons beyond what you’ve been taught all your life about wellness or what the system dictates you should do.
Did you know that chronic disease is the biggest challenge we face in healthcare today? Incredibly, the scale of chronic disease killers overshadows many other kinds of deaths combined.
Just because there is an epidemic of chronic disease doesn’t mean that it is right or the way life is supposed to be. It’s just not normal to be burdened with chronic disease, immobile, spending most of your precious free time in a doctor’s office or under someone’s care, and not actually enjoying a healthy vibrant life.
You’re not just “getting older” or some silly nonsense like that.
Health is all about perception, “seeing” and transformation and once you understand these essential elements and learn to put them into action, you’ll begin to soar to your goals and win while others who cling to old habits and mindsets fall short.
Winning The Wellness Game
In order to win the wellness game and sustain a healthy life, you have to close the gap between where you are today and where you want to be in the future.
You’d be surprised to come to know that your perceived “gap” is really not a looming mile-wide canyon tethered by a tightrope from end to end that you need to some how navigate by yourself.
With the right tools, support and a sound process, you can actually turn your life around and head in the direction you desire. In my experience, it all comes down to focus and where you put your energy. Apply your energy to the things you can achieve rather than on what is not working.
People who are successful tend to be forward thinkers and doers… they put all their energy into their vision, goals and a strategic plan to get there, then they jump into the flow of the process and see where it takes them.
“Habit is habit. It is not to be flung out of the window by anyone, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.” Mark Twain
I’d encourage you to move into a positive self-change “zone” frequently by speaking more confidently of what you “will do”, as if you’ve already reached your goals. This can positively shape your self-image and goal accomplishment.
I would discourage the use of language such as “I’ll try”, “I may”, or “I’ll see” as this will zap your motivation and confidence.
Design Your Healthy Life
It’s just a fact that when it comes to having and sustaining a healthy life, it’s your vision, action plan, healthy behaviors and positive attitude that matter most.
If you could change and overcome all your challenges overnight, it wouldn’t be worth it. You may not see results as quickly as you like or your healthy behaviors may take on a slightly different form from what you had originally envisioned, but remember that what matters most is that you are changing and growing and evolving into your best healthy self.
Get the Support You Need
No one heals from serious chronic conditions or trauma or makes big changes in their life on their own.
We need to surround ourselves with a support team that can not only inspire us, but also serve as educators, mentors, shoulders to cry on, and coaches to get us over the finish line a winner.
Your support team needs to have some skin-in-the-game and watch your back… these are the keys to transformational partnership. So surround yourself with a diverse team that all have one goal in mind… getting you (and keeping you) healthy.
Think outside of the box of the standard health care model, which unfortunately doesn’t support integrative and complimentary care, and draw to you those with the right mindset, tools and listening skills. These can be traditional doctors, alternative practitioners, nutritionists, body workers, fitness trainers, church members, and various support groups from within your community.
“Always align what your head wants with your heart desires and your body truly needs, and balance and harmony will follow.”
In most cases (non life-threatening) it doesn’t matter what initials come after a person’s name… it’s the quality of their heart and loving compassion that truly matters most on the healing journey.
Coaching a Winner
One of the best ways to be successful with changing up your diet and lifestyle is to work with a Health Coach and dive into the transformative coaching process.
If you’re not familiar with what Health Coaches do, they are trained to assist you to discover your strengths, clarify your values, increase your awareness, set priorities, brainstorm possibilities, and co-create a plan for your success. They also help foster a new vision of your “best self” and help you put in place supports and environments to become that.
Ever go to your doctor and they put you on a diet or exercise plan but don’t tell you what to eat or how to exercise safely. Or what about finding out you need to be gluten-free and realizing that it is hard to decipher all the right foods, go grocery shopping and learn how to prepare new meals. This is where a health coach becomes a valuable partner in your health.
Health Coaches empower you to self-reflect and find your own answers. Coaching is not a therapy approach to achieving lasting health and the answer to all your life challenges.
What coaching does best is work with people who are motivated and already doing some things well in their lives and who wish to do better, tackle more challenges or to develop themselves in other areas.
