How many times have you heard yourself saying, “I’ve tried for years to lose weight”, or “I’ve tried a million things to feel better”, or “I’ve tried every diet on the planet” or my favorite, “Nothing EVER works for me”.
Let’s be honest, I bet you only tried the same 2-3 things over and over again to feel better or you went on a couple of crash diets for a few weeks and just gave up, or you didn’t really commit to a holistic weight loss program that would address more than just food.
Is the problem that all these get-healthy strategies really don’t work or is it that they are only part of the equation to success? From my experience coaching clients, strategy only takes you so far in the wellness game. The rest is up to you and how you use your mind, physiology, feelings, and a little bit of magic, to finish the race a winner.
It’s Not The HOW That Matters Most
What do most of you do when you want to change something in your life, particularly with your health… you go completely mental. You plot and scheme, watch a bunch of videos on YouTube, download checklists, read ebooks, get free advice from experts, etc., until you’re convinced that you have the perfect plan in-hand—the winning strategy. But when you go to execute your perfect plan, it doesn’t work, or it blows up in your face (again).
It’s not the strategy for wellness or transformation that you brilliantly aspire to put into action and see through to its positive outcomes that is wrong or not working—it’s YOU. The truth is, there are all-kinds of how-to strategies out there and odds are most of them actually work when applied with the right individual and in suitable conditions.
But here’s the secret: It’s not about HOW you do things, but WHY you do them that matters… and the WHY can only be answered by knowing who YOU are. The HOW comes automatically when you truly get and come from the WHY.
Another special thing about your WHYs are that deep down they tell the story about your feelings. Why you do something is because of how it makes you feel.
So WHY does wellness or transformation or a better life matter to YOU?
You might say, “I want to play with my grandchildren”, “run a 10K”, “feel and look 10 years younger”, “thrive in my business”, or “find the right partner”. These are terrific WHYs, full of emotions like happiness, confidence, and success. If you can feel the resonance of each and every one of your WHYs from head-to-toe and inside-to-outside, your on track. Just remember that YOU are in charge of making something out of your WHYs.
So if you get centered in who YOU are and what YOU really want, then the HOW is no sweat at all. In fact answering the WHY and being committed to that fully will fling open the flood gates of support beyond your wildest dreams.
Choices & Committed Decisions
Our lives are about choices—eat the piece of cake or eat the apple, exercise or go for a drink after work, lose out on sleep or sleep in, think positive thoughts or harshly judge yourself or others, be grateful for all you have or not… the list goes on.
The choices you make everyday affect you more than you realize. Rather than procrastinate in fear of making the wrong decision, let the power of your WHY allow you to weigh your options and act on the best one.
You choose to be an “active” choice-maker or a passive victim. So if you want a healthier life, finally lose that belly fat, find a movement/fitness program that really supports you, or just be more conscious and accepting of your body, you can’t waffle. YOU have to ACT.
Dreaming Is Creative Choosing
So what are YOU choosing to DREAM? Are you dreaming big for this moment, or year, or even lifetime? Or are you like most people, dreaming really small about this or that thing you want or maybe it’s something you want to avoid. Without dreams, you are just passing time.
Do a quick exercise… write down your Top 10 Dreams. Then sit with those dreams and see and feel each one of them completely. Don’t just read the list—get up, move around, shake your body, and scream and shout your dreams one by one.
If you can’t grab hold of and step into a dream like it was happening at that exact moment, the dream isn’t strong enough or your WHY isn’t clear enough. No worries, keep refining your WHYs and working on shaping and creating your dreams.
Don’t give up or go mental. It doesn’t matter if you fake it until you make it.
You have to KNOW your dreams with your physiology—feel them, see them, hear them, touch and smell them.
When a dream is truly worth creating and bringing forth in your life (believe me your body will give you a definite YES), grab hold of it and bring it into your heart for safekeeping. Treasure those dreams and keep them close.
Make a choice every day to be with your heart and visit all those dreams. Take 10 minutes in the morning when you are fresh and ready to imprint your body with good energy for the day and open that door that leads into your heart. With a smile on your face take inventory of all your dreams by visualizing them one at a time.
Breathe in joy and gratitude and experience all the hope and wonder your dreams hold. That happiness, love and greatness you feel is YOU.
Now go out and share your dreams with the world.
